Frankie Wales is the founder member of the Association and a Senior Amateur Boxing Coach.
Frankie joined Grangetown Boxing Club at a time when he was excluded from school because of his behavioural problems.
Frankie carried on his Amateur Boxing for the next 16 years travelling all over the UK and Europe to fight. He then trained as a professional fighter for 2 years and was the main sparring partner of Cornelius Carr who became World Super Middleweight Champion in the 1990s.
In 1997 Frankie hung up his gloves and retired, but not for long. He missed the training so much that he decided to open his own gym locally. In 1998 he set up the Redcar Amateur Boxing Club. Unfortunately the premises became unsuitable and a new home had to be sourced.
In November 2000, Frankie managed to secure a new home for the Boxing programme within The Coatham Memorial Hall in Redcar. The Hall at that time was a disused building and had been hugely vandalised. Through Frankies dedicated fund raising activities, the Hall was refurbished, equipment was purchased and a Boxing Ring was installed.
The Boxing Clubs Youth Inclusion Focus took off in a big way. Lots of youngsters began coming through the doors and in December 2000, the Club was formally opened by the Mayor of Redcar & Cleveland. Since then, the Club has gone from strength to strength and Frankie himself has spearheaded a number of projects, all involving young people.
Over the past couple of years, a more strategic approach was applied regarding the programmes available to the youngsters. The programmes now incorporate foundation elements which link in well with the National Worklessness Agenda. This has resulted in the Organisation now seen as a credible sub-contractor to Private Sector Welfare to Work Organisations. Currently, the Organisation is in the process of submitting Expressions of Interest for the Flexible New Deal programme due to start April 2009.
The success Frankie has achieved with his Boxing programmes and Social Enterprise for the young, earned him the honour of receiving an invitation to 10 Downing Street to meet personally with Prime Minister, Gordon Brown, earlier this year.
